The final research question is do toy advertisements continue to show gender roles and define what a child has the potential to do with their life? In an advertisement for a toy cottage from around the late 1940s, we see a young girl basically just playing house. The narrator of the commercial is saying, “she has room for her dreams to grow” While this is being said the young girl is baking in a toy oven and taking care of a baby doll. Viewing this today we can see a limitation on her dreams. This is basically saying she will have other goals in life but to take care of a house and family. Later in the commercial, it says “contain her imagination”, today we see this as contain her stop her imagination from growing and giving her new ideas. Two commercials were analyzed to compare the first was one for Barbie. This is rather new campaign it is called “you can do anything”. The campaign is extremely positive towards women. In the commercial, young girls are taking on various different careers, that at some point Barbie has had. The girls are being very professional and confident. The message of the campaign is that girls can do whatever they want they do not have run a household, they can have a career and they can be what they want. The second commercial is for Goldieblox. In the beginning, three girls are watching these girls on tv dressed up as princesses, and just being girlie. The three girls watching clearly are not impressed so they create a sort real-life mousetrap game. This commercial is showing the girls as inventive, it is showing that they too can expand their imagination and creativity. This was also very positive towards women. After analyzing these commercials we are able to see that gender roles, really do not exist in toy advertisements anymore.
