Gay Adoption Should gays and lesbians be allowed to adopt children? Same sex marriage is a highly controversial topic in itself, nevermind about same sex adoption. Even though same sex adoption is legal in the United States, laws may vary from state to state. Supporters of gay and lesbian adoption make the point that there are many children in foster care who need to be adopted, and a gay or lesbian household can provide the same benefits and love that a heterosexual couple can. However, opposers to gay and lesbian adoption argue that gays and lesbians cannot provide the upbringing of a traditional family and it wouldn’t be in the best interest of the child. Gays and lesbians should be able to adopt, there are too many children out there who need a home to make same sex adoption illegal There are many children in the foster care system who need to be adopted. If same sex adoption is made illegal, many of these children will be forced to stay in foster care instead of being adopted into a loving home. According to DCFS, “There are 17,019 children in foster care in Illinois -- about 6,100 of those children are being cared for by people who are not relatives.
