Like most people in the world, I am stuck in between the pro side of locking sex offenders up for good and the con. As previously talked about there are many downfalls if the right people are not locked up for their crimes, but also many downfalls locking people up who don’t deserve it. The laws are just general most don’t go into detail, we just interpret them for ourselves and sometimes we are wrong. Of course molesting anyone is horrible but there are many cases where that is not what happened. Humans see and hear only what they want to, and it’s not right. You can’t expect to have justice when we only want to sympathize with what the “victim” is saying. People who molest children purposefully knowing their age but still pursuing them are the ones who need to spend the rest of their life behind bars. Those who have lied to the alleged “sex offender” about their age should spend some time behind bars. Most people don’t even know the people of most risk of being sexually assaulted are disabled people. Disable people are more than two times as likely to be molested by a sex offender. This is really sad because most of them can’t even do something to help themselves. A lot don’t have the cognitive skills to even speak up for themselves after it happens. Molestation is the most unreported crime, “63% of sexual assaults are not reported to police. Only 12% of child sexual abuse is reported to the authorities. The prevalence of false reporting is between 2% and 10%” (NSVRC). These statistics show how humiliating and worthless people feel after being sexually assaulted, it’s so horrific they don’t even want to tell
