"I was raped 43,200 times," this is a quote from a sex trafficking survivor, Karla Jacinto. She was held captive for four years until the day of her rescue. It's a miracle that Karla had been saved at all, as only 1% of sex trafficking victims are ever rescued. There are more slaves in the world now than there has ever been in history. Each year, an estimated 800,000 women and children are trafficked across international borders, not even including the trafficking within countries.

These girls literally lose their identity, they are re-identified with a number, no longer a person but an object. Their passports are stripped away from them, increasing their dependence on the traffickers, especially if they are in a country illegally. The victims often lose their family too, as 11% of the time, they are sold to the traffickers by their family.

The traffickers do not care about these girls. For the traffickers, these girls are just easy money. And the buyers are not scared of raping the girls because the business is often extremely lucrative, and they very rarely get caught. There is no typical client that purchases the girls. There are poor buyers, rich buyers, single, married with children, anyone could be a buyer.

Some girls have another job too to pay off the debt of travel expenses and accommodation they owe their traffickers. The victims and traffickers could be anywhere as they blend into society. There are minor details that could give away if one of your co-workers or neighbours is a trafficking victim, such as if they are accompanied by a controlling person and don't speak on their own behalf.
