Adolescents on stage reciting Shakespeare, soccer balls flying into the goal, paint brushes painting against a canvas, and footballs being thrown into the air are all opportunities students could join and do at school. Unfortunately, Elizabethtown School District (EASD) must terminate one program: sports or humanities, due to a financial issue. The EASD School Board should keep sports over humanities due to sports allowing students to be active, students meeting new people and sharing strategies, students gaining knowledge about the sport they play and earning scholarships. Athletics bring our school district together. One might say that humanities have a positive effect on students; however, adults and students agree that athletic activities allow children to get out of the house and be active. Getting children and teens active could help prevent childhood obesity. Obesity can lead to future health problems and can negatively affect students’ education. Also, when children stay active, they get less screen time than those who stay at home. Less screen time allows students to develop a non-limited brain and prevent dead brain cells. In sports students can score the winning goal or keep score on the sideline, either way, they get to know those around them, their coaches, and themselves which bring our district closer together. Children and teens can also learn more about their sport, and this could help them gain a scholarship and go to college. Students also have the option to continue throughout their lives which could get them well known which could maybe lead up to the Olympics, or they could play just for enjoyment. With all of these facts, there’s no reason why EASD should eliminate
