Coach Carter said “....student athletes. Student comes first.” This is relevant because student athletes are still students like everyone else that attends school. There are student athletes with a 1.8 GPA are getting scholarships over non-athletes that have a GPA anywhere from a 3.4-3.8. I also believe that students that work hard for grades should get some type of scholarship. High school students should have a certain GPA while playing sports because not everyone is able to play sports, it keeps them honest and in check, and they need to learn that being able to play school sports is a privilege. Young kids these days take a lot of things for granted, anything from the shoes on their feet to the ability to succeed in sports. Most student athletes use their talent as an excuse of low grades. A mandatory GPA requirement would keep each player in check. In some cases when a player can’t keep a steady GPA average they are distracted. Whether that be family problems, alcohol, or drugs. Not only does this method keep players grades up, but it also helps them personally. Along with it being a responsibility for them it also is a privilege to play school sports.
In other countries, most of the schools don’t have sports linked to their school. Physical activities are mostly ran by the kids or other programs around the town. Citizens in the U.S. need to realize it is a privilege to be able to play in front of many of fans in he or she’s home town. Aside from having that delight, we aren’t entitled to it. If a mandated GPA requirement was put into effect, it would help student athletes realize what they have compared to others. Many high school athletes take what privileges they have for granted, when students from other countries would greatly appreciate school funded
