Teens Driving with Cell Phones: A Terrible Mix Going home to visit her folks in Caldwell, Idaho, Taylor Sauer was alone in the car passing time with being on her phone talking to a friend about the Denver Broncos football team. While on the phone, she told her friend that it is not safe right now to be on the phone and driving. Taylor did not know that was her last message to anyone. She then ran into a tanker truck that was going up a hill at 15 miles per hour, while she was going 80 miles per hour and collided right into the back of it, killing her instantly. According to the article in Today’s News, Taylor’s dad, Clay Sauer said, “She was probably on the phone in order to stay awake, and that she was probably tired,” he mentioned this to Ann Curry from the TODAY show. Taylor was going home that evening to visit her family and to get away from school. She went to Utah State University and was going home for the weekend to see her 11-year-old sister (Inbar, 2012). Now after the crash happened her parents are now lobbying Idaho legislators to banned talking on the phone while driving. Idaho is one of the states that still have not banned talking on the phone while driving. “Taylor’s mom, Shauna thinks that Taylor would approve of the new law if set,” even though she was on her phone communicating about every 90 seconds while driving home, which was mentioned by Idaho State Trooper Sheldon Kelley in his crash report (Moye, 2012).
