Fear, an emotion based on the belief that a person or a greater force plans to hurt people, elucidates why the teenagers witnessed and charged people of witchcraft in The Crucible. The residents of Salem lived a rough life because people accused residents who evoke a witch like behavior; thus, the accusers took the residents’ lives. The witnesses accused innocent people which led to innocent lives eliminated by execution because the witnesses did not like them. While certain people took advantage of the trials, others still feared that a witch lived among them. Certain characters could have stopped the trails from the beginning such as : Danforth. Danforth posses the power of deciding if an individual would have the death penalty. In other words, he made the ultimate decision of if the teenagers’ behavior portrays as real or not. His belief in witches made him execute innocent people. His faith took such a drastic turn that he clearly states, “And seventy-two condemned to hang by that signature?”(87). His signature gave him the power to save lives. Danforth’s signature makes him the most responsible. Danforth did not just own the power to save them with his signature, but also through the experience and respect that he gained in life. When Corey storms into the court, him and Judge Hathorne have an argument and Corey exclaims, “You’re not a Boston judge yet, Hathorne. You’ll not call me daft!”(85). The citizens of Salem give Judge Danforth more respect than the other judges because he makes the ultimate decision and has more experience. The citizens would have accepted his decision if he demanded an immediate termination of the witchcrafts. The citizens believed post-truth rulings than firm proof.
