From the little six year old that is on the local swim team, to the 17 year old in high school football, most youth play sports. Most people believe that sports help you stay fit, but research has shown that Sports don’t only help improve physical activity but they can help improve children and teens in academic achievement, social life, and it will help prevent some diseases. One of the many ways that sports benefits children and teens is it helps them in academics. At interventions at Vanves in the 1950s, Trois–Riviera’s in the 1970s, and South Australia in the 1980s found that when large slices of the school day were taken away from academic subjects and devoted to physical education, academic performance was unchanged or improved. The studies have shown that physical education had no negative effects but it improved the academic performance in kids and teens. Secondly there is persuasive evidence that acute and chronic exposure to physical activity improves cognitive function in both able-bodied and disabled children, and there are positive correlations between levels of physical activity and academic performance. This evidence proofs that as the kids start to exercise from P.E. to extracurricular sports they will start to improve in school. Sports provide children time to meet new people and make friends they might not have met otherwise. In rural areas in particular, attitudes towards sport are very positive and sport is seen as a kind of “community cement”. The positive community attitudes towards sport are justified by research.
