Later School Start Time, More Sleep
“The school day should start later for teenagers because they aren’t wired to go to bed early and they need their sleep,” says author, Dan Weissman, in Marketplace with the article “High School Will Keep Starting Too Early, Here’s Why”. Students aren’t getting enough sleep, focus, or the health they need. No matter what, students will continue to go to sleep around the same time, you can’t change their bedtime but you can change the time they have to get up. School start times should be held later for more sleep, better academics, and better health.
To begin with, although some believe having more hours of sleep don’t help much, school start times should be held in other for students to put more hours in their sleep. According to the survey taken by students, “Van Buren Freshmen Academy Survey” given by English teachers (2017), “57.7% out of 381 students sleep 6-8 hours.” This is important because high school students should be getting 8-10 hours of sleep on a school night. Adolescents need to have enough sleep to make it through the day. …show more content…
According to the Classroom Synonym article “What is the Advantage of Having School Start Early?” by Marie Anderson (2013), even though starting school later shortens after school activity meetings, it has its benefits, “These benefits include better academic performance, fewer absences, and even improved health.” This is important because if adolescents get enough sleep and their performance is better, then they won’t need as many hours of activity time because it’ll be easier to get stuff done since they are more focused.
