“Devin. Darci. We need to sit down and have a conversation. I am going to be completely honest with you guys. As you both know, I have had many appointments with doctors over the past few weeks. I have some news, and I want both of you to be calm when I tell you. I have been diagnosed with cancer. This cancer is not like the cancer that I had last time. This cancer is a rare and extremely aggressive form of leiomyosarcoma, and my doctor has told me that only fifty percent of people survive this illness. Although this may seem slim, my doctor and I have agreed that I will undergo the most intense form of chemotherapy available in order to give myself the best odds of survival. Every other week, starting next week, I will receive chemotherapy for five days straight. I will be extremely weak, and this will be extremely difficult. I do not, however, want you two to worry. We will overcome this, and I will survive.”
I was thirteen years old when my mother explained her predicament to my sister and me.
