The UN has taken many actions to counter the growing threat of honor killings. Since then, majority of honor killings are perpetrated against woman the branch UN Women has taken action of this issue on behalf of the UN. One of the most significant actions that UN women have hosted to confront this issue was the “The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women”. The results of this convention were many new pieces of regulation like the general recommendation 19. This made the legal defense of honor in a murder trial meaningless. The General Assembly also passed resolutions A/RES/57/179 and A/RES/59/165 to prevent ‘honor based violence against women. These resolutions do this by making governments to investigate and prosecute honor killings without biases like honor or cultural customs. This is because their ancestors had a code of honor called, “Machismo”. This describes justification for honor killings. Also up till the late 1990’s honor was a valid defense in court for murder in Peru. However there has been a changing of views of honor killings. In 1996 Peru started the Ministry of the Promotion of women and human development. This program helps to create equality of genders before the law. It also tries to enforce the UN resolutions of the use of honor as a defense. These measures have been ignored by the country. The country does supports the education of a culture to why honor killings are harmful and wrong aligning with the views of the UN. The Peruvian government is trying to get the rule against honor as a defense removed. They also promote this idea to the UN about this matter.
