Sweat ran down his back as the sun hit him. Peter Winthrop was chopping wood in the unbearable summer heat. He was going to get that ticket, the ticket that would take him away from this mess of a planet, and to Mars. As he slashed through his last of wood, the man gave him twelve dollars. Peter gave the man a nod as he headed toward the dark alley. In the alley, where scraps of metal and cardboard were discarded, Peter sat down and took a jar filled with coins and dollars. He began to count his savings down to the last coin. At the last penny he had made it to hundred dollars. That was all he needed, he was going to buy that ticket. The man examined each dollar and coin, and handed Peter a ticket,a and continued to pack. Joy filled Peter, he would be ready for tomorrow because that was when the numbers were being called.
Peter dashed to the arena and stood with a crowd filled with millions. The silence was deafening, you could hear a pin drop. Every man and woman holding a ticket, waiting for the numbers, the most important numbers they would hear in their lives. Anticipation buzzed through the air, and footsteps echoed throughout the room. A small sliver of paper in the palm of the man’s hand had caught his attention. “We are very sorry for the delay, but the time has come to announce the winner of who shall join the four astronauts to Mars,” announced the man with quite the booming voice. “The first number is…one,” he shouted.
