In Phaedrus, Socrates and Phaedrus have a debate of lovers versus non-lovers. Phaedrus reads a speech from Lysias while Socrates reads his own tale calling upon the muses for help. Both of them give compelling reasons to choose non-lovers over lovers. Phaedrus talks of various social aspects of the two while Socrates discusses how love is devoid of rational thought. The best reason I think was given in Phaedrus’s speech, that lovers are often subject to the dread of public opinion. For me this is the best reason because I watch it happen around me at every school, restaurant, or public place that I go to.
