“Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by the Beach Boys starts off with a strong introduction that includes many different variations of instruments that represents Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” technique. Some of the instruments noted are multiple pianos, the trumpet, saxophone, 12-string and electric guitar to name a few. After the introduction, the variation of instrumentation is maintained throughout the song, with a noticeable increase late in the song as the tempo starts to pick up again with the contrasting verse chorus. The “Wall of Sound” production techniques that are used in “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” is a great addition to the Beach Boy’s harmonies. The addition of a multiple string instruments such as the cello and violin are known to be production techniques of the “Wall of Sound”. Other instrumentation noted were the drums, horn, flute and bass guitar that also represent the technique. After the introduction, the song slows down with more of a focus on the vocals, but then quickly makes a dramatic come back with the increase of instrumentation. This portion of the song reminds me of the “Wall of Sound”, as it overcomes the vocals. Again, I feel that the “Wall of Sound” technique used by Brian Wilson, made the Beach Boys music very unique, creating many different dynamics for their music that contributed to their
