How our Philosophies and Attitudes are Like the Brave New World
In the Divergent series, the characters are all separated into different factions each having different jobs depending on their virtues. They all have different personalities and different beliefs. They have the Abnegations who are selfless, the Dauntless who are brave, the Candor who are honest and much more. Divergent is similar to the Brave New World where they have different castes. They have Alphas, the intelligent people, Betas, the second-most intelligent people, Gammas, the third-most intelligent and much more. They are all given different jobs depending on their caste. There are multiple reasons for this. One reason is how much easier it is to obtain drugs. According to Business Insider, “The price of cocaine has dropped 80 percent since 1982 and continues to fall because drug dealers have found better ways to produce and transport the drug”(Lutz). Pills are also easier to get nowadays. Even over the counter pills can become addicting. Painkillers like Ibuprofen and Advil can become addicting. These pills help people with any pain they might have. People can get addicted by relying on these pills to do the job whenever they feel like they need them. Prescription drugs can also become addicting. Opioids are painkillers that are prescribed. When taking these constantly, the body adapts to them being taken and it feels withdraw symptoms when trying to stop. In the Brave New World they are greatly addicted to soma. In, Brave New World, after Lenina and Bernard had met John and Linda at the savage reservation, Lenina was disgusted by everything. After all of this Lenina felt as if she needed soma. Huxley said, “As soon as they got back to the rest-house, she swallowed six half-gramme tablets of soma, lay down on her bed, and within ten minutes had embarked for lunar eternity”(Huxley, 149).
