From the beginning of the book to the end of the book, Charley’s physical and mental appearance changes dramatically. At the beginning of the book, Charley is just an ordinary fifteen year old boy doing whatever he can to be in the war. By the end of the book, Charley is twenty-three years old, walking with a cane, and thinking about ending his life. Any event that occurs in someone’s life, can change their life in many different ways.

Third battle.” (Quoted from Soldier’s Heart by Gary Paulsen, 89) To help the ill soldiers, Charley has to do something that is out of character for him which is killing horses to feed the ill soldiers. Just killing these innocent horses is enough bother Charley because he grew up working with horses. After the battle at Gettysburg, Charley went down to the hospital, and he ends up having to build a wall of dead bodies to block the wind. Seeing all these dead bodies during the battles and at the hospital can mess with you. No matter how hard Charley, and other soldiers, try to forget these memories, it will forever haunt them, and these events will change their personalities.
Seeing the things Charley witnesses can traumatize anyone at any age, and their lives can be forever different. The war greatly affects Charley and the life he now has after the war. He now is walking with a cane and a limp. Charley suffers to hold onto a job, and he now has a soldier’s
