Upgrading the practice act in all 50 states is very essential for overall growth of physical therapy profession. There is no uniformity among states in providing direct access for physical therapy treatment. Maryland is one of those 18 states where direct access is granted without any restrictions. However, neighboring states like Virginia and District of Columbia allow direct access with some restrictions. This lack of uniformity throughout different states in the country affects over all competency and growth of physical therapy profession. Applying the knowledge gained through doctoral degree will be very crucial in shaping up successful physical therapists. Knowledge combined with clinical skills will make every physical therapist deserve to earn the respect and right to work as any other healthcare clinician with full rights on writing orders for diagnostic and over the counter medicines. Apart from regulatory support, physical therapy practice needs support from all healthcare insurance providers without which the profession will not flourish.
