Clinical Rotation Summary (Pre-Op)
The clinical site I was assigned to was Pre-Op. This department is basically where all patients go before getting admitted into surgery. It is located on the 2nd floor at JFK Hospital and this is where nurses do charting on all patients and use medicine to put them to sleep. In this department, it is the nurse’s job to go over the patient’s history, take IV’s and stuff of that matter. Every patients needs to get a physical, typically 24 hours before going into surgery to make sure everything in their body is up to date. The nurses also go over all the paperwork to make sure the patient signed on everything needed, make sure the patient is going under the correct procedure and the doctors have permission to do the surgery.
My experience in this department was actually pretty boring to be honest, my guess being only because there were no patients where I was at the time I was there. All the patients were scheduled to come in either after, or at the time I was leaving which kind of sucked. Also it was mostly dealing with paperwork and computer work, I expected to see the tools that were going to be used in the operating room.
I asked the nursed what type of education is need for this job and she told me you need to get your LPM first and then you need to become and RN, which usually takes about 3 years; she has been doing her job for 37 years. I also asked what times are busiest in that
