Imagine if a loved one had just been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. He/she doesn’t have much longer to live and is suffering greatly. If the loved one lived in Oregon or another state that allowed Physician-Assisted Death (PAD) he/she would be able to die with dignity but, if he/she didn’t family members would have to watch them suffer the few months left to live. Physician-Assisted Death allows someone who is in such bad health conditions where it hurts them to stay alive to end their life, free of pain. This process is safely monitored and assisted by a physician on a terminally ill patient. Physician-Assisted Death must be legal because it stops pain and suffering of the patient and reduces damaging financial effects of hospital care on families. Lots of people are already struggling with their money situations and when a person is ill in the hospital only going to live for a couple more days it creates even more hospital bills. “Taking Physician-Assisted Death will ease their families financial burdens as well as their suffering.” (De La Torre) It’s not worth paying so much money to watch someone suffer. All the hospital bills added together sometimes cover more than people’s rent! Often the cost is sometimes too much for the terminally ill’s family. Every day they are waiting for the day the pain end, the day they die, so why are they being kept alive. “The cost of maintaining a dying person has been estimated as ranging from about two thousand to ten thousand dollars a month” If someone is told that they have 5 months left to live why would they want to sit through the pain in the hospital if it’s going to cost over 10,000 dollars to maintain them.
