Throughout The Life of Pi written by Yann Martel, several symbols are conveyed as the novel progresses. The two most meaningful symbols are the color orange and another is Piscine’s abbreviated name Pi. Pi’s family gets shipwrecked and they do not survive; however, Pi and a few animals survive at first, including the orange tiger which is strongly symbolized throughout the novel. Piscine’s abbreviated name Pi is symbolized because it shows certain directions and helps him find his way back to land. Throughout the novel, the color orange is seen many times. Orange symbolizes Pi’s hope and survival. He himself maintains hope while he was on the boat with the tiger. He had very strong hope that he would survive. When the ship (Tsimtsum) sank, the remaining crewman helped by giving Pi a life jacket that came specifically with an orange whistle. The boat was also orange, which was important for his survival. The cat is symbolic of Richard Parker the Bengal Tiger, who is of great help to Pi’s survival during his 227 days stranded at sea. The boat, tiger, and the whistle (which were all orange) all helps to Pi’s survival. Another important symbol is ‘Pi’, which is Piscine’s nickname. While Pi was at a primary school, some other students would annoy and bully Pi by calling him ‘pissing’ instead of his real name, Piscine. He got his real name from a swimming pool in Paris, called Piscine des Tourelles. That is why most of the students at his primary school found his name to be somewhat difficult to pronounce.
