"Pickle" a Film about a Couple's Dedication to Animals

Pickle is a 2016 short documentary directed by Amy Nicholson that chronicles a couple's tale of caring for their many unorthodox pets.

This charming documentary is shot through mostly interviews with the couple, Debbie and Tom, as well as video, pictures, and illustrations of their pets. Pickle is also very aesthetically pleasing. The interview portions of the film were shot against crisp white backgrounds, and the outdoor scenes include shots of skies, and of the couple walking through the woods. The animated drawings that are including in the film act as storytelling devices, and really add to the tales that Tom and Debbie tell.

Tom and Debbie found him outdoors, while extensively injured, but they rescued him and took care of him. Pogo's back legs were severely broken, and it left him unable to use them. But Tom created a makeshift wheelchair so that Pogo could run around as much as he wanted. Like many of their other pets, Pogo was treated very well, getting scrambled eggs and watermelon for dinner every night, even getting shampooed and blow dried on certain occasions.

Although, named after the fish, the documentary does not get to discussing Pickle until the last few minutes. Named because "he was in a real Pickle", the film's namesake had a physical deformity that did not allow him to float or swim properly. So, he had to be kept securely in a foam enclosure that Tom built in order to live happily. The film came to a close around discussion of Pickle's funeral, and what Tom and Debbie believe happens to living things when they pass.

Pickle is a testament to two pet owners who put everything they have into caring for their pets. The film shows that Debbie and Tom truly want to give their animals comfortable lives, even though many of their pets have conditions that end their lives quickly. They know that although lives may come to an end, living things deserve care and comfort. Overall, Pickle is a heartwarming story of how this couple cares for animals that they
