The famous quote that was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr says, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moment of comfort and convenience but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” His quote clarifies that anybody can seem relaxed and well when life is going fine; however, put them through hard times and see how they reacted to it, by doing this they prove who they really are. In literature characters face many challenges; some of these characters overcome these challenges, and others do not. For instance, in Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet, the hero Lord Hamlet faces many challenges in Denmark, and in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, Ralph faces many challenges as chief of the island. Piggy faces many challenges but he has a hard time overcoming them. A challenge Piggy faces is gaining leadership. In the beginning of the novel Ralph finds the conch but Piggy is the one who identifies it and figures out how to use the conch. Piggy feel as though because he came up with the idea to use the conch as a way to maintain order, he should be chief. Piggy does not overcome this challenge instead he lets Ralph be chief. Piggy is very intelligent but he is bullied more than others on the island; hence, one of the challenges he faces. Jack bullies Piggy many time while on the island, he would snatched Piggy’s glasses off his face, punch him and just disrespect him whenever he feels like it and Piggy would just say, “let me go” (Golding 40). Another challenge he faces is feeling ignored by the boys on the island. Piggy tries to tell the other boys to be more organize and write all boys names down but nobody listens and because of this Piggy gets furious, “I told you to.
