Piggy’s Leadership Qualities Many great leaders of this world were very intelligent with great ideas, although it took time for them to learn the proper way to implement their ideas. Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding in 1954, takes place after World War II, during the Cold War era. The story depicts the life of young British boys who are stranded on an island with no adults. Goulding wrote the book as if the plane they were flying in was part of operation Pied Piper, when many British boys were evacuated to America during World War II. In this book there are three main characters Ralph, Jack and Piggy who take on the task of governing the island. Throughout the book, Ralph and Jack are fighting for power. Although the writer leads the reader to believe that Jack and Ralph would be the obvious choice for leader, Piggy is the one that stands out as having great leadership qualities. Piggy has the highest intelligence, is the most mature with sensible ideas, and is comparable to a number of great leaders of this world.

This book portrays Piggy as being the smartest and most mature boy in the group, but he is not considered for leader by the rest of the group. Throughout the book he continually demonstrates the qualities of a mature leader; however, he has trouble enacting his ideas without Ralph.
