In 1998, 4 college students from New York elected to travel into the uninhabited Pine Barrens of south central New Jersey to collect research on an endangered type of tree frog for a nature class. These four students were confirmed to be missing about 4 weeks after they set out. They packed approximately 4 days of food, gear, research equipment and other supplies needed for survival in the wilderness. This seemed like an average camping trip, but the Pine Barrens are known for being home to the infamous mythical Jersey Devil. The Devil has said to have been sighted several times since 1890. However, its existence has yet been proven. In 2008, paranormal researchers made a significant breakthrough. Two bags of hiking equipment, along with a diary of one of the students who documented 5 days out there were found. Not only were they found torn apart, but they were found hanging from a tree that had several demonic symbols etched into it.
