Planned Happenstance In The 21st Century

In the 21st Century is seen as a very progressive era, from innovations in technology to strides social justice causes. These social and technological progresses can be related to the Krumboltz and Mitchell’s theory of Planned Happenstance which states that a series of events play a role in shaping a person life or career. The life of Will Allen as told in his book The Good Food Revolution can be an example of the theory of Planned Happenstance, specifically his battels against racial injustice. From having his mother, Willie Mae, who wanted to escape their family’s long history of working on fields and living through the era of Jim Crow where Black people were not seen as human but reduced to the color of their skin. Black people were reduced to a label, “colored”, not Man, Women, Boy, or Girl, but “colored”. Furthermore, his Father, James, tried to escape the life of Sharecropping which he felt was “like slavery under another name” (Allen 2). Allen states that “nearly half of African Americans born in the year 2000 are expected to develop type II diabetes.” (Allen 7) and that “four out of every ten African American men and women over the age of twenty have high blood pressure” (Allen 7) he relates these statistics to a broken food system. In which poor Black families in low income areas have more access to unhealthy food than fruits and vegetables. This broken food system why Allen chose to dedicate his life to educating the younger generation about healthy eating and living. He did this by buying a greenhouse to cultivate his own farmers market within that greenhouse to give these low-income communities a place to buy fruits and vegetables at a reasonable
