As Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, once said, “A woman must have her freedom, the fundamental freedom of choosing whether or not she will be a mother and how many children she will have. Regardless of what man's attitude may be, that problem is hers - and before it can be his, it is hers alone.” On January 22nd, 1973, the case of Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in the United States of America. This case made it possible for women to make their own medical decisions, including the right to have an abortion without interference from the law. Recently, this case has been in danger of being overturned by the Supreme Court. Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, argued, ”No woman can call herself free until she can choose consciously whether she will or will not be a mother.” I believe this quote means that only women should be able to make this decision, not men. Men outnumber women in the government of the US. If the government votes on abortion again, that means that the majority of the votes will be coming from the male population. If this law does not apply to men, why should they be able to vote on this issue? The male population of the Pro-Life group will be voting against an issue that only women have to deal with, even though they will never have to go through it themselves. Gender equality is a nationwide issue that is still not solved. By taking away a woman's own right to make the choice for herself and her body, the gender gap will grow. They will argue, “When a woman has an abortion, she is essentially killing a living, breathing human with rights to life.” This statement comes from people who have not done the research on this topic. As stated in Top 10 Reasons Abortion Should Be Legal, “A fetus under 24 weeks old is incapable of self-determination, because it has not properly developed the necessary organs or systems to make this possible yet and is only considered viable when it is able to live outside the woman’s uterus on its own.” (Top 10). Abortions are never done after twenty four weeks into the pregnancy because it then becomes unsafe for the mother. Therefore, a fetus is incapable of making their own decisions, so the decision is solely up to the mother and she should be able to choose for herself. When a woman has an abortion, she should be allowed to make the decision for herself and no male politician has the right to take that away from
