An idea quite true and often brushed aside. Many people become caught up in movements and opposition, and they easily forget that all people deserve to be able to practice their rights and be shown respect. This very idea is one that partially fueled Margaret Sanger and her fight for women's choice; as well as the principle of both creating and keeping Planned Parenthood afloat. Planned Parenthood needs to remain a resource to both symbolize and make truth of the fact that women can always practice their right to choice. Since its opening in 1916, Planned Parenthood has been subject to several controversies, the most recent being Florida's investigation in 2013. The investigation was concluded, with a resut in the clinics favor. It turns out that there was no wrongdoing, but ears were raised and eyes were turned to Planned Parenthood, which has since been under constant attack by pro-life politicians. Their greatest concern seems to be the abortion services offered; though the organization's services are far more extensive than that. To many pro-life supporters’ surprise, abortions account for a mere “3% of nearly 10.6 million services provided by its clinics in 2013.” (D’Angelo Gore) The remaining services include; STI diagnosis and treatment, contraception, cancer screenings, and pregnancy tests. This means that one of its least requested services is being targeted and putting the clinics at risk. Planned Parenthood was initially created and a resource center for poor women to have access to contraception and prevent pregnancies, in turn preventing the number of abortions being performed. Mark Ruffalo, much like Margaret Sanger, has a heartbreaking reason for such strong feeling towards womans’ choice. Ruffalo's mother was forced to have an abortion as a young woman, at a time that such a thing was illegal. Ruffalo uses this knowledge of how dangerous and inhumane the mistreatment of women is; as well as the complete lack of acknowledgement of their rights, as a constant reminder of why it is crucial to never give up on women and their rights. He states that his own mother “fought to make herself more than a possession; she lived her life as a mother who chose when she would have children.” (Mark Ruffalo) and expresses his wish for his own daughters to the the same choice. People against Planned Parenthood are fighting against the right to choice. Not only the choice to have an abortion, but the choice women have to practice their rights to do what they feel is right for
