The first piece of excerpts that I decided to write about is titled "Un Simple Bracero". The story starts out describing a young man that has faced many trials and tribulations in his life. Starting out with his father's death and inheritance of poverty and struggle. One day this man gets into the Bracero program and believes that he has won the lottery. But things did not turn out as well as he had hoped. As he leaves his country behind and arrives in Arizona. He is greeted and introduced too starvation, humiliation, nakedness, sleep deprivation and hot temperatures. His cousin who he confined in convinced him that California was the way to go. But sadly enough, as they arrived the harvest season was over. As him and his cousin began to plot their next move a border patrol agent interrupts. And asks for proper identification, his cousin leaves the scene and never comes back. Leaving him by himself and at the hands of the border patrol agent. …show more content…
As he is on the brink of insanity he then finally reaches his native land. And the first person he spots is his cousins brother whom he hides from. Since he is feeling ashamed and embarrassed he decides to purchase a razor to clean up with in a local restroom. A year later the man attempts this so called lottery again and fails again. Only this time he is robbed of the money he was going to use to join the Bracero program. It wasn’t until the age of seventeen that his dreams came true that he became a Bracero. And out of the one hundred and sixty braceros only three were chosen as supervisors to apply for legal residency. And this lucky man was Mary Vargas's
