Plutarch Vs Creon Analysis

While reading Lycurgus by: Plutarch, a main idea that could not go unnoticed was the idea of power. Like Creon in Antigone, Lycurgus had a ways of leading people. Even though the two men were very powerful, Creon used his power for tyranny, while Lycurgus gave his power to the Senate of Sparta (Plutarch). Also, Lycurgus wanted the people of Sparta to have a voice and was willing to have the people of Sparta vote on important decisions. With that being said, Creon felt as if he had all power in making final decisions.
Another main idea that was clear in Lycurgus, was feeling wise. This is similar in The Trial in Death of Socrates by: Plato, where Socrates feels as if he is one of the wisest men, if not the wisest. Lycurgus and Socrates share

They believed in educating the youth. Socrates taught the youth his beliefs, which later ended up causing his death. Lycurgus also believed in this method. “Every end and object of law enactment it was his design education should effect.” (Plutarch).
A contemporary political issue that relates to Lycurgus’s view on power, would be Bernie Sanders’s campaign for President of the United States. One of Sanders’s main pushes for running for President, is how he plans on taxing the top 1% of society. Like Sanders, Lycurgus also feels that his society was not fairly divided. “For there was an extreme inequality amongst them, and their state was overloaded with a multitude of indigent and necessitous persons, while its whole wealth had centred upon a very few” (Plutarch). Bernie Sanders also makes it known that he dislikes bribery. From watching the debates, he makes it clear that he does not accept any bribes, while his former opponent, Hilary Clinton regular accepts them. This is also similar to Lycurgus’s beliefs. Lycurgus felt that if Sparta got rid of gold, and other currencies, it would put an end to bribery. He ended up being right.
