After exploring the various perspectives surrounding the story of John Smith and Pocahontas, I argue that companies/individuals should be held responsible for their perception of history. I believe this to be true because no parent can shield their child from a trending movie like Pocahontas; kids would still hear about it and see the merchandise. This is shown when Laura McClure writes in “Pocahontas as a teaching tool” when she states, “The Pocahontas lunchboxes and notebooks and necklaces are everywhere, and some of us have heard boys taunting girls by yelling “Hey, Pocahontas!”…The Mattel toy company had already made over $40 million in Pocahontas sales…” (McClure 137). Kids should not hear false stories that help form the new world they call home today. In Disney’s version they bent the truth throughout, making Pocahontas from an innocent ten year old to a sexy woman. They also made the Powhatans seem like killers, making children think of all Indians as just savage killers. For instance, Dr. Linwood Custalow and Angela L. Daniel illustrate in The True Story of Pocahontas “No one attacked them at night…Instead, the Powhatans carried loads of corn to the ship for them” (Custalow and Daniel 30). This supports my argument from the fact that the Powhatans were kind people; they would never try to kill Smith. Unlike in the Disney version when the monster of a chief tried to, but the dainty yet strong Pocahontas saved Smith. Some might argue that it’s just a cartoon so it doesn’t not need to be the full truth its just a cartoon not the history channel. Although, many kids learn from watching from this movie kids will think that all Indians are killers. They’re putting a false image on the Powhatans or even Indians in general.
