Poem Analysis: Lucinda Matlock

Looking back at real life, everyone has experienced surreal moments they will never forget and never want to forget. Others have experienced close death, tragedy, and utter failure, all of which come together to make us what we are; humans. In the poem, Lucinda Matlock, the narrator of the story recalls back to her old life where she’s experienced everything from raising twelve children to retiring just as she passed. Masters does a great job at showing the imagery if her life in this poem by recalling the names of where she visited many times and explain what she did there and why in short sentences with naturalistic senses about her whole life. Just like Lucinda in the poem, I have experienced such a variety of events in my lifetime being only this young, from climbing the highest peaks of mountains, to the deepest depths of emotions, and feeling a real sense of blissfulness from a higher entity and other people. …show more content…
I’ve made memories with strangers that I’ll never forget that have molded me to what I am today. Putting in the hard work always pays off in the end when you can look back at a tangible result and knowing you’ve made something of yourself. “It takes life to love life” is a quote from the poem I can truly comprehend because the amount of love I’ve shown others has always come back positively for me with about an equal amount of love. When Lucinda tells the reader in the poem, “Life is too strong for you- “, I can see what she is saying to her “degenerate sons and daughters” only because they are her young and she has experienced more than them and therefore, has more wisdom. I am not yet as wise as someone of her status, but she makes a good point from a perspective of her
