Point Reyes is located 13 miles south-southeast of Tomales. Point Reyes National Seashore is an extremely popular national preserve. Point Reyes was land of the Coast Miwok Indians. Beginning in the 1950s, a national bipartisan movement was born of principles that may seem obvious today. Unconvinced by land developers who promoted residential construction as unmitigated progress, citizens and politicians banded together to preserve open spaces near where they lived. Without these efforts, the Point Reyes National Seashore and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area would not be the coastal wonders they are today.
Climate
We have micro climate in Point Reyes which is very similar to the type of climate that prevails on the Mediterranean.

Vegetation native to Point Reyes includes Bishop Pine, Douglas-fir, cost redwood…etc. saltmarsh is one the communities that is a home for different species like crabs and clams. This is very important since it’s a feeding area for birds that travel to the north. There are different species of birds that are feeding differently and do not interfere with each other (Resource Partitioning). One very interesting community in this region is chaparral that is a fire dependent vegetation type. Many chaparral species are obligate seeders are require fire in order to reproduce. Although occasional germination from seed may occur in disturbed areas along trails, these species require fire to scarify seeds and expose mineral soil to allow for reproduction at an ecologically meaningful scale. Although ground fire is very important in this region, the crown fire that is created by human can be very harmful since it’s very hot and can burn everything and reduces the defense of invasive of the ground. In some locations these post-fire populations are now (12 years post-fire) being shaded out by tree species such as bishop pine. We also learned about how to track different species of trees. For example we looked closely at an oak leave. We learned some terminology like, Dichotomous key, which is a tool that allows the user to determine the identity of items in the natural world, such as trees, wildflowers, mammals,
