Throughout history many leaders had different ways to take control of their people. Some may have failed and had a revolt against them during their reign others succeed and brought their country to great riches and world power. Two leaders that stand out in particular, Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union, and Pol Pot of Cambodia both used fear and violence to rule.
Joseph Stalin was a man of great power, terror and was known for using ruthless and relentless techniques of controlling his people. He would starve his people for not listening to his command and abuse his power. According to document 5, “Millions of innocent lives were, to Stalin, a small price to pay for safeguarding his power”, as seen stalin was ruthless when it came to keeping his position in the government. That wasn’t all Stalin would also arrest innocent people because to him arresting the actual criminals would not make his people feel fear but instead feel safe, but with all of these ruthless acts Stalin made the Soviet Union into a world power that no one

Pol Pot came to power by taking over by force Cambodia unlike Stalin. Pol Pot was forced to the jungles of Cambodia by the at the time ruler Prince Sihanouk, where he created a rogue army named Red Cambodians, which was very similar to Mao Zedong of the people's republic of china’s name for his party. From there he took over Cambodia by fear. Much like Stalin and Mao he was ruthless in ruling too, according to document 7, “Troublemakers were killed on the spot. Often, animals were slaughtered to intimidate owners.” Pot like Stalin and Mao was not afraid of killing to make his people submit to him, according to document 7, “Doctors and staff were killed if they resisted expulsion. Hospital patients too weak to walk were shot in their beds.” This again shows the ruthlessness that Pot’s presents as he rules over his
