In recent news articles and broadcasts, we hear about many innocent African Americans getting killed due to police brutality. Police brutality is when a police officer uses excessive force (a force beyond what is necessary to handle a situation) when dealing with civilians. In most cases of police brutality minorities are the target. This issue is also the most common form of police misconduct. Police misconduct includes false arrest, intimidation, racial profiling, surveillance abuse, sexual abuse, political repression and more. Although recent news articles have reported about African Americans being victims of police brutality, they are not the only ones affected by police brutality, it can happen to people of all races and ethnicities.

Due to the increase of police brutality cases, many citizens feel threatened by the police instead of protected. It also seems as if police officers are more focused on filling their quotas instead of enforcing the law. Although there were systems designed in certain cities to stop police brutality they unfortunately failed. Police brutality is becoming more prevalent in today’s society which is leading to an increase in protests.
Technology plays a big role in police brutality. Smartphones can do virtually anything, people can record anything they want, including police brutality crimes that happen in public. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram help spread the word and spark discussion among young people, this is why police brutality is such a huge topic.
In conclusion, police brutality is a huge problem because innocent people are getting hurt and police officers get away with it. This issue leads us to the question “Who do we turn to for protection against the ones that are supposed to protect
