For my service learning research project I created a website that displays the statistics behind one of the most talked about problems in modern day, police brutality. It additionally explains in detail the rights you have when being pulled over or arrested by a police officer. When this project was first assigned I did not really know a lot about police brutality besides what I heard on the news with cases like Eric Garner and Michael Brown. This project has been educational and it made me realize how large of a problem police brutality is, and how much worse it is becoming. This project took an abundant amount of research and a large amount of work to complete. It used previous knowledge from my law and public safety class and new knowledge from various online sources. The information on the rights given to Americans when being arrested was from my academy class. It was all based off of the information given in chapter 14 of our street law book. Then it was expanded on by legal websites and books further explaining the role each amendment has. For example, the first amendment does not only protect the freedom of speech it protects freedom to assemble, freedom of the press, the right to petition, and freedom of religion. …show more content…
I choose the year 2010 because it had the most data available and had the most reliable sources accessible to the public. For instance, in 2010 there were 4,861 cases of police brutality, but those were only the ones reported. Additionally, the rate of police officers charged with murder is higher than the general public being charged with murder. And if they counted excessive force charges leading to a fatality the rate for law enforcement officers would be about 472% higher than the general public.
