The amount of incidents involved with intentional force from police on to civilians has raised commotion among the citizens whether or not the police of America are safe. Police officers have been caught beating on people even after they have made their point. Racism also seems to be a main issue as black persons are more likely to die from police brutality. In the editorial, “Political Lies about Police Brutality” the Editorial Board uses rhetorical explanation, down players, and truth surrogates to argue towards suppressing police brutality.
The Editorial Board uses rhetorical explanation to express their anti-police brutality position. It has been brought to attention that people don’t take or see police brutality as a serious issue. Frustration is rising as the ones who are trying to do something about police brutality are being put down for creating commotion. In “Political Lies about Police Brutality” there are multiple uses of down players that are used to make the other side of the argument seem less convincing. For example, the Editorial Board states: “Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey took this posture on Sunday when he accused President Obama of encouraging “lawlessness” and violence against police officers…” In this situation, the Editorial Board downplays lawlessness in a way to mock Chris Christie. The Editorial Board obviously is against Christie’s point of view in the matter. Another example is when Mr. Comey said “that heightened scrutiny of police behavior and fear of appearing in “viral videos” was leading officers to avoid confrontations with suspects.” Likewise, the Editorial Board downplays viral videos, expressing their belief of it being ineffective for Mr. Comey’s view of police
