Polish-Linguistic Interview

The participants of my interview were five adult; three Persian-speaking males, one of them Arabic- speaking female; and the other one Polish-speaking female. All of them have been living in the United States for almost 4 years and less. All of them were University students in Chicago and completing their Bachelor’s degree. Two participants were already completed the graduation from their respective countries and are now pursuing a Masters degree. Two of the participants were continuing their education in Psychology fields, one of them in art, one of them in Education, and the other in law. All of the interviewees included in this study had a noticeable slight accented speech.
Each participant was interviewed separately. They were all interviewed in different quiet settings. Each of the interview lasted for at least 40 to 45 minutes. The interview consisted of asking the interviewees five open-ended questions. Their responses were recorded. All of the participants were able to understand questions thoroughly. There was no need to be repeated.

They also mentioned that they had issues with pronunciation upon their arrival to the US. They still believe that they are not able to pronounce words like a native; however, proficiency level is their main concern while communicating. One of the participants, Arabic-speaking female, in this study believed that despite her proficiency level, she is not being understood because of her accent. It was obviously noticeable that she had a nasal tone in her speech. It was really hard to understand her. However, the participant was very advanced level
