During the Victorian Era pollution was a massive complication and is similar to the decline of our earth today, however, there are differences such as there are now specialized associations to aid and support the prevention of this issue. Although present day pollution is being helped by these services there are still copious similarities between the two time periods, including the fact that it is associated with poor working class people as well as it is extremely common. There are services that will help today's pollution issue, but in the Victorian Era the citizens were not so lucky and did not have this now common aid. An example of this issue in the earlier time period can be found in Charles Dickens most famous novel Oliver Twist which is in the setting of the Victorian Era and states the following, “ He kept on his course, through, many winding and narrow ways, until he reached Bethnal Green then, turning suddenly off to the left, he soon became involved in a maze of the mean and dirty streets which abound in that close and densely populated quarter.” ( Dickens,173-174). Unfortunately, it was extremely common then and now. It is heart sickening that it is part of our everyday life to see rubbish blown across the road or strewn around in the grass and we think so little of it. This has been going on for decades, including the Victorian Era, which is why the land is as in ill health as it is.
