Constitutional engineering is designed to bring about certain objectives when dealing with specific basic questions of organization and process. When it comes to choosing an electoral system which represents either the differences in a society fairly or whether to choose one capable of yielding efficient governments to make political decisions, I believe in having a system which focuses on democracy. Therefore, an electoral system which will represent citizens of the state to feel as though they have greater control over the decisions being made by the government system because they chose the individuals who are making the decisions to be in power and all is done fairly. In a democratic government, the citizen’s rights and freedoms are suppose to be and most times are protected because the reason they chose the individual in power is because they made promises to the people, to protect them and respect their beliefs, values and needs. They are the citizens of their state, with this they should be granted power to help make the changes they would like in their state. Even though everyone may not vote for the same person, the majority rule allows for most of the citizens, if not all to feel well represented when it comes time to make decisions. Non-Democratic governments may be run by small elites, but a democratic government is not. A democratic government does its best to make sure all citizens, rich, poor, etc. are well represented, respected and taken care of whereas various types of non-democratic environments tend to be run by small elites and value the needs of citizens of higher class compared to those of lower. For example, the Canadian government has many different political parties such as the conservative party, the new democratic party, the liberal party, bloc Quebecois and the green party. The amount of ideas and issues being brought up are not only very relevant to many different types of individuals, but they are also being voted on by many different people with different views. So, for instance if there was an issue with water pollution here in St.John’s, the green party would bring the issue up and have a vote on the way to take care of the issue. By doing this the government allows for different solutions to the issue to be made for the government to be able to choose the correct one fairly and with the help of that areas citizen’s. Instead of having just one group of people making all the important decisions for everyone because they feel entitled due to being wealthy and having similar ideas as other individuals developing a group (elites), in a democratic government there are many people with different opinions which are well respected and taken deep into consideration to make the final decision, giving the citizens of that state power in the final outcome of the issue. Having an electoral system which represents all the differences in a society fairly allows for various types of individuals to be represented more accurately because they are the individuals in politics who share their ideas and concerns and make sure that their values and beliefs are being taken care of to the best of the ability. This type of electoral system allows for the citizens to feel more connected because they are not being judged on their status like they would if they were run by an elite government which leads to the entire population to feel more comfortable and trust their government to do what is best for them as a whole. Electoral systems which represent their capabilities of
