A hero is a man admired for his achievements, and or noble qualities. Being brave is an important thing for Ponyboy, as he shows his bravery in many different situations. Ponyboy is also very loyal to his gang, the greasers. Ponyboy is determined to do whatever it takes to help or rescue those in need. Ponyboy is the primary hero in The Outsiders because he is brave, loyal, and determined.

Ponyboy shows his bravery many times throughout the course of The Outsiders. He shows his bravery when he goes into the burning church without thinking twice. He is brave because he goes into the burning church to save the helpless kids with the potential of being killed. Another instance in which Ponyboy shows his bravery is when he and Johnny go to the park at night and encounter a group of Socs. Ponyboy shows his loyalty to Johnny many times in the story. When Ponyboy runs away with Johnny after the murder of Bob, it shows that he is loyal to Johnny. Instead of being a disloyal person and turning Johnny in, Ponyboy decides to run away with him. Another instance in which Ponyboy shows his loyalty is when they are getting ready to fight against the Socs. Since Ponyboy knows that Johnny is probably going to die from his injuries, Ponyboy wants to win the fight for Johnny. Ponyboy is loyal to Johnny because he considered Johnny as another family member after their relationship with each other strengthened while they were running away from the police. After the greasers beat the Socs in the rumble, Ponyboy visits Johnny in the hospital as he is slowly dying from his injuries. Ponyboy shows his loyalty because he wants to see Johnny one more time before he dies. He tells him how the greasers beat the Socs and how he (Johnny) is in the newspaper for being a hero.
