Heroes can be average people like you and me. A hero is someone who always does what is right in every situation. Ponyboy is a very heroic person and it shows in his actions and personality. Johnny is a hero during the time he’s still alive on earth. Dally is not a hero because he is mean and uncaring and only cares for Johnny, no one else. Heroes can be any person of any race, gender or age.

Ponyboy is a good person and it shows in everything he does. Ponyboy not only saved the children but he did it as gently as he could without hurting them. Like in this quotation Ponyboy says that “I picked up a kid, and he promptly bit me, but I leaned out the window dropping him as gently as I could.” (pg. 93). Ponyboy gently tries to save each child by dropping them slowly out the window to safety. Ponyboy wasn’t scared and didn’t listen to Dally when he told him to get out of the church, even though he could die or get hurt. Pony is focused on saving the children's lives, Dally: “‘Forget those blasted kids.’” I didn’t pay any attention.” (pg.93). Ponyboy doesn’t listen to Dally and in doing so saves the kids’ lives and becomes a sensational hero.

Dally seemed like a hero, but he wasn’t much of a hero at all . Dally says, “‘Forget those blasted kids!’” (pg.93) an doesn’t care for the kids. Dally had no regard for the kids in the church and he didn’t do anything to save them. Dally is mean, violent and awful, these are not traits of a hero. Dally shows he’s violent when Ponyboy says, Ponyboy: “…if I ever did a stupid thing like that again he’d (Dally) beat the tar out of me.” (pg.96).
