The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a novel that focuses on the fact that running away is not the solution to any type of problems. Ponyboy Curtis was an orphan that considers his friends, family. Johnny Cade was a victim of abuse. His father and mother were constantly fighting, drinking, and yelling. One night everything changed for everyone and nothing would ever be the same.

Ponyboy and Johnny had fell asleep in thier favorite vacant lot and woke up way past his curfew.As Ponyboy walked into his house he felt the tension rising. Darry confronted Ponyboy and demanded that he tells him where he has been all night. When they were out of breath, they start to walk and smoke. Ponyboy was freezing and decided to go home but not talk to Darry. As they were walking they were were surprised because they saw a blue mustang with 5 soc’s in it on Greaser territory. The car came closer to them, then all 5 socs got out the car and started taunting Pony and Johnny calling them “white trash with long hair.” Ponyboy and Johnny were terrified but Ponyboy was “tough” enough to spit at them of them. Bob told Ponyboy, “You could use bath.” Ponyboy tries to runaway but David got a hold of him and dunked his head under water in the fountain. Just as Ponyboy thinks he’s going to die he wakes up on the pavement next to the fountain , “coughing water and gasping.” Ponyboy turns around and he sees with a pool of blood and Bob in it realizing he’s dead and that Johnny killed him. After, a couple weeks of boredom and bologna sandwiches Dally went to the church and takes them to Dairy Queen to eat. While they’re eating Pony explains to them that they are going to turn themselves in, which Dally wasn’t much of a fan for that plan. As they drive back home they see the church is on fire, Johnny assumes that the fire as caused by a lit cigarette. A school was having a field trip near the church and the teachers were worried because some children were missing. Ponyboy dashes out of the car as soon as he heard the children screaming from inside not realizing that Johnny followed him and behind Johnny was Dally trying to prevent them from going in the church. Dally couldn’t prevent them so he helped get the children out of the burning church. Johnny was tossing kids out of the church as pony was doing the same in a hurry because the roof was crumbling down. Johnny pushes Ponyboy out the church in front of him as a piece of the roof came down. Once Ponyboy was out of the church it was too late to help Johnny his spine had been permanently fractured. Dally burned his arm getting Johnny out of the church. Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally had driven to the hospital where after a couple days would be where Johnny had his final breath. Johnny meat a lot to his friends which were his only family and the person who really took it the hardest was
