The period that gave us the Furby and the fanny pack. “Simply the happiest decade of our American lifetimes” that’s the 90’s. It was a hot, memorable decade. With brands like Geico, the Oreo Cookies, and Calvin Klein, the 1990’s was possibly the best era.

1990’s Historical, Social, and Political Events

In the 1990’s, the internet became popular and largely changed the way people socialized, worked, shopped, and even dressed. The 1990’s was the information age. The most important influence on both pop culture and fashion in the 1990’s was technology. With the internet arriving, information would include the latest fashion trends and styles. Chanel was a trend setter for the jacket trend that was popular at this time, along with Giorgio Armani, and Calvin Klein. The most popular night-wear was the skinny black dress worn short with black stockings and high heels. By 1991 designers everywhere relied on the jacket for contemporary dressing. Leather and denim jackets appealed to the younger people. For sophisticated women they wore long curved jackets from major designers as well as less expensive versions. Women's work attire consisted of longer jackets over a skirt but wearing jackets with leggings, tights and pants was also acceptable. Women who did not have to dress formally which was most students, T-shirts, sweat pants, and jeans were worn. Plaids made a big appearance in the fall. Suits, coats, and furs would be coordinated with plaids. Fashion in 1992 changed by having the most popular color, black. Isaac Mizrahi and Marc Jacobs were largely accepted in the 1992 fashion world. Women who weren't fans of skirts would wear pants. The pants were from the 1970’s style with flare and boot cut. Animal prints were very popular, it would be on purses, dresses, and shoes. Many women would not buy fur coats unless they were made from faux fur. The 1993’s is when women began expanding on what they wanted to wear which was short skirts and pants. A fall success was the fitted, long, black winter coat. The grunge look started appearing on more teenagers as they were seen wearing flannel shirts and growing their hair, even the preppy kids. The ball cap was a popular accessory and so were loose fitting cotton t-shirts. Nike Air Jordans and military style jackets were commonly seen. By 1994 the grunge look had completely taken over. The grunge look consisted of vests, sweaters, scarves and an assortment of jackets.
