Pope Joan and Her Characteristics In the year 1870, an African women named Harriet Tubman created the famous Underground Railroad. She used her dedication and bravery to overcome dangerous obstacles from the South, with the result of over 70 slaves converted to freed men and women. Harriet can be compared to a female that became the first pope, but they both used the same attributes to overcome obstacles that headed their way. Dedication and bravery is found in Harriet Tubman, and it is also found in Joan. In Donna Woolfolk Cross’s novel Pope Joan, the protagonist is known to have devotion and courage that enables her to conquer her disadvantages. Joan expresses courage when her love ones are in deep emotion. For example, at the grubenhaus, the canon commands John and Joan to pray at the family altar all day as he does a memorial for his now deceased eldest son Matthew. For instance, the canon has a friend named Aesculapius that visits the grubenhaus in the season of autumn. During his visit, Aesculapius is known to be a scholar that speaks Latin which gives Joan an opportunity to test her knowledge on Latin of whether he approves it or disapproves of it, “Joan took up her sewing and stationed herself in a chair a short distance apart, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible (Cross 33).” Joan using this as an opportunity is a great risk because she tries to express her Latin language to canon and he basically blamed her for killing his brother, which results her getting beaten by him.
