The Department of Defense and the Armed Forces are prohibited from engaging in domestic incidents within the borders of the United States because of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 which is a federal law (Katz, 2013). Their power of authority is to protect our nation from threats from without. This act was created to severely limit the power of our armed forces on individual states. The Posse Comitatus Act also prevented the United States Armed forces from enforcing state or local law. The Posse Comitatus Act was created just 13 years after the civil war when state rights were held sacred which would have been the most logical reason this act was created.
