The potlatch name was given by the Northwest Coast celebrations. Origanted from the Nuu-chah-nulth word "pachitle" that meant "to give'". Also "the Potlatch brought to expression basic principles involved in social status and also served as a major force for social integration"(Page 131). A potlatch is a big celebration that often to longer than a year to plan. This usually occurred with a person's change in social status, such as, birth, death, and coming of age. These services included a feast, customer dances and singing some lasted up to three weeks.
