Potty Training Tips from Mr. Daniel!

The most important aspect of potty training is CONSISTANCY. Getting children to learn healthy toilet habits will be more prolonged and difficult without a solid routine. The basic outline for a potty schedule must include regular potty periods throughout the day that is the SAME every day.

Potty breaks, diaper checks, and changing periods occur in regular intervals. Every hour/2 hours works best. Try to create a schedule that allows for these potty periods to revolve around transition times such as after morning snack, before playground time, after playground time, after lunch, before snack, before combining etc.
Sample Schedule: 9:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm, 2:30pm, 4:00pm, 5:00pm

Call children one by one to the bathroom during times where the other children are engaged in an activity such as center time (before/after a transition). This way, waiting time is limited and children don’t find ways to entertain themselves due to lack of attention. This also allows for fewer bodies in the bathroom that distract children who are learning to use the potty.

Use cues such as a song, a signal, a timer, or other attention getters. Make sure to keep it consistent.

A visual flow chart can be made to put on display in the classroom in front of the toilet for extra guidance and to give the children something to focus on while sitting.

Use rewards! Rewards can simply be giving verbal praise, a hug, earning a job, doing a completion song, or earning a special place on the rings.

Let the kids own it! Allow for children to be actively involved in their potty training. This can range from picking out a book to read on the toilet (gross I know), placing a sticker on the chart for when they go on the toilet, or letting them ring a bell every time they make a number two. It’s up to you.
