It is clear that the major factors of colonialism, post colonialism, political corruption and natural disasters contribute to the wide spread poverty in Haiti. Consequently, many economic policies were introduced and implemented to alleviate the phenomena of poverty in Haiti. For instance, Structural adjustment programs (SAP) were implemented in Haiti in the 1980’s to revamp the economic market to promote development (Weisbrot, 1997). International financial institutions such as the World Bank, IMF, and Inter-American Development were significantly known for the role in shaping economic policy. Therefore, Haitian government and international supporters called for an “economic development plan that prioritizes poverty reduction and focuses on …show more content…
The government main focus was rebuilding the nation’s agriculture production, the focus was to expand the nonfarm sector to absorb surplus unproductive labour as it exists from the agricultural sector, which would generate higher income in households (Bank, 2014, pp.62). The Ministry of Agriculture Resources and Rural Development implement agricultural policy in 2010 to combat the extremely poor state. The plan consists of four main objectives, that call for the ministry to enable better governance, raise agriculture productivity to improve food security and increase revenue, increase exports, and promote ecological agriculture to reserve natural resources (Bank, 2014). These strategies have proven little success in alleviating the poverty in Haiti, because it does not consider the living condition of those in urban settings. To back this up research shows that workers in Haiti, are mostly employed in agriculture and the rest work in the informal sector (Bank,2014). This is problematic because people who are living in urban areas may not have access to employment because of the limited positions in the agriculture
