Poverty has affected and will continue to affect the government for many years to come. The government has set safety net programs in place to provide more opportunities to those who do not make above a certain amount. The government programs have reduced the number of poor individuals as well as reducing the number of uninsured individuals. These programs are provided through the government but the federal revenues have to come from somewhere to supply the government funds. The federal funds for 2015 are provided through individuals who pay income taxes which will provide 47% of all tax revenues, payroll taxes paid by individuals and employers accounts for 34% of all taxes and then finally there is corporate income taxes that are paid by businesses …show more content…
Local business can become affected due to having unhealthy and uneducated workers (Dario 2015). Also poverty can put a burden on the state due to some of the children living in poverty that are being picked up for things as simple as truancy and then put into state's custody; therefore causing more money put out from the state to care for these children. These families could be living in higher violence areas and children may observe the bad behaviors that go on. The children could tend to act out the violence seen and therefore cause crime rates to increase. The state then has to pay out more due to paying for these children while incarcerated. On average it cost each state $407.58 per person each day. There is also funds needed to operate these facilities therefore taxpayers pay (Sneed 2014). The issue of poverty does take an overwhelming amount of effort and many resources to make the programs work and be efficient. The target for this objective is to have 50 states and the District of Columbia (Healthy People n.d). 14.2 is setting at or above 185% of the poverty threshold and the baseline for this is 22 states and the District of Columbia have done this by 2015. The target for this objective is 23 which is also including the District of Columbia (Healthy People n.d). The affordable care act gave states the chance to expand Medicaid to cover almost all lower income Americans who are under the age of 65. Tennessee at this time is not adopting the Medicaid expansion. (Medicaid Income 2016). The objective is not being met in our community because the state did not adopt the expansion.
